Wi-Fi connected but no internet

Router reboot order, DNS flush, and how to tell if it is your ISP.

Full Wi-Fi bars but nothing loads: your device is talking to the router fine, but the router isn’t reaching the internet – or your device is asking the wrong address book. Here’s how to find out which, fast.

First: is it one device or all of them?

  • Every device is down – it’s the router or your provider. Go to the reboot step.
  • Just one device – skip to the device fixes below.

Reboot the router properly

  1. Power off at the socket – not the reset pinhole, which factory-resets it
  2. Wait a full 30 seconds
  3. Power on and leave it alone for two to three minutes until the internet light goes steady
  4. If the internet light stays red or keeps flashing, check your provider’s status page on your phone (mobile data) – if there’s an outage in your postcode, it’s them, not you

Single-device fixes

  1. Flush DNS: press Start, type cmd, open Command Prompt and run ipconfig /flushdns
  2. Forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network in Settings, re-entering the password
  3. Try a different DNS: if pages resolve slowly or half-load, the provider’s DNS may be struggling – we can set your device or router to a faster public resolver

For a business, repeated drops are a different conversation: a line fault ticket with the carrier, or a router that needs replacing before it fails completely. If your internet going down costs you money, ask us about business broadband with failover – and for anything urgent, raise a ticket.
